every day we come across terminology and acronyms
used in our industry, but do we really know what they all
mean? Keynotes aims to explain some of the terms used
in this issue:
clis (chain leg installation system):
A system for making
a midline connection on a mooring leg (for example chain to
wire) underwater without the need to recover the ends to the
surface. It is essentially a frame, landed on the seabed, with
the wire socket locked into the frame. the winches on the
frame then pull in the chain and the shackle connected to the
socket on the end of the wire. the clIs includes all of the
handling systems to insert the shackle pin and make up the
shackle. A remote version of the clIs, which uses rov and
remote tooling instead of divers has now been developed
and successfully used in the installation of the mooring
system for the maari Field in new Zealand.
Ballgrab system:
Used to recover pipelines in instances
where no Abandonment and recovery (A&r) system is in
place, for example following a dropped or damaged pipeline.
the ballgrab is inserted into the end of the pipeline and
locks in place when tension is applied. the ballgrab is then
recovered to surface with the end of the pipeline attached.
It is also used as a mooring connector to connect mooring
chains to anchors remote on the seabed. this technique is
employed where one vessel is used to install the anchors
and another to install the mooring legs.
