Floss magazine caught up with the rapper
Hurricane Chris on the verge of releasing
his first major album debut entitled 51/50
Ratchet. The rapper explains "Ratchet is our
culture; how we walk, how we talk, how we
eat and how we dress. It's our swagger -- our
whole attitude about ourselves is ratchet.
Ratchet can mean we went to the club last
night, we got loose, we partied hard, we did
our thing, we got ratchet." Hurricane Chris
has been putting it down since the age of
10. Locally he caught the attention of DJ
Hollyhood with indie releases "Ya Hear
Me" and "Yep" along with some mix-tape
appearances. His hit club banger, "Ay Bay
Bay" has taken just four weeks to breeze
into the top 10 of Billboard's rhythmic airplay
charts. It's also at No. 8 on the Hot 100 and
No. 12 on the R&B/Hip-Hop charts.
FLOSS Magazine had the opportunity to
discuss the radio storm he's got cooking up
for us in the near future.
Miss Knockout: What's up? It's Miss
Knockout from FLOSS Magazine.
Hurricane Chris: What's up!
K.O: What was it like starting out down
there in New Orleans? Shreveport is
where you're from correct?
HC: Yeah. Well I did two volumes of street
mix CD's. I did the second one when Atlanta
radio stations began playing "Ay bay bay." It
was that song that caught the attention of
producer, Michael "Mr. Collipark" Crooms.
K.O: And who actually brought it over to
J Records? How did you get signed to
them?
HC: Collipark and Smurf started playing "Ay
bay bay" at the ATL station and it caught the
attention of J records. Shortly after that, I
got signed.
K O: When does your album come out?
HC: It comes out October 23, 2007 and it's
called 51/50 Ratchet.
KO: What made you come up with that
concept 51/50?
HC: We have a saying in my city called 50/50
that means 100 percent real. Well I call my
album 51/50 and that's 101 percent real.
KO: Oh wow that's hot! So what made
them pick "Ay bay bay" as the first
single?
HC: When I got the deal that's what made
them want to sign me. That track was
getting radio airplay already.
KO: How did your life change since after
your hit single caught the attention of J
Records executives?
HC: It changed for the better! I was a
millionaire before the deal. I'm very down to
earth I even stay in the club and party with
the people after I perform.
KO: Do you still live in Louisiana or have
you moved since you were signed?
HC: I still live in the same place.
KO: How is it since Katrina hit?
HC: Well we didn't really get hit by the storm
were I'm from. It's about 5 hours out of
Louisiana so we didn't flood.
KO: That's good to know. Getting back
to this debut album, could you describe
some of the songs on this album?
HC: The album is real versatile; I got a
song called "Gettin Money." It's a real
inspirational song. I also have a song called
"How Players Rock Hand Claps." That track
is the next single and we just did the video
for that one.
KO: So you have a label right? What's
it called?
HC: It's called Go Live Ent. / Lava House and
I have some artists I'm working with. One of
which includes, Angie Loc who appears on
the "A bay bay" remix.
KO: Well it was nice `kickin it' with you.
HC: The album is in stores now!! Go get
that.
