But ask the animals,
and they will teach
you
;
the birds of the air,
and they will tell you;
ask the plants of the
earth, and they will
teach you;
and the fish of the
sea will declare to
you.

Who among all these does not know

Job 12: 7-10 NRSV
By Jeff Silverman
Most dog behavior professionals agree
that the saddest part of our jobs is that
people wait too long to contact us. Every
week I see people whose dogs have in-
jured someone, often more than once. By
that time, solving the problem frequently
requires weeks of hard work and hundreds
of dollars in training fees. When families
cannot take on such an intensive program,
they face heartbreaking decisions. Few
people want to take in a dog with serious
problems. That makes euthanasia for
behavior problems the number one cause
of death amongst dogs under 3 years old.
It doesn't have to be that way. Serious
behavior problems usually start slowly and
escalate over months or years. Aggres-
sion, for example, starts with growling,
escalates to snapping, then to lunging, and
fi nally to biting. If a qualifi ed professional
intervenes early on, we can usually solve
the problem quickly and easily. By the
time most dogs have bitten or remodeled
the house in a fi t of panic, however, we
might have a serious project on our hands.
Human-directed aggression, separa-
tion anxiety, and severe shyness should
ALWAYS be addressed immediately. Ask
your veterinarian for a referral to a profes-
sional with the education and experience
necessary to handle serious problems.
Standard obedience training can often ex-
acerbate these kinds of problems, so make
sure that you see a qualifi ed professional
like a Certifi ed Dog Behavior Consultant,
a Certifi ed Applied Animal Behaviorist, or
a board certifi ed Veterinary Behaviorist.
