We are told the hardest part of pet hos-
pice is actually not the ending, but rather
the beginning. Making that initial call to
enroll a pet in hospice can be one of the
biggest challenges, because it forces the
person to come face to face with real-
ity. When the veterinarian gives the pet
a terminal diagnosis and says "there is
nothing more that can be done," please
understand the doctor is speaking only
from an "aggressive, quantity of life"
point of view. Much can be done from a
"comfort, quality of life" point of view.
With pet hospice, a multi-disciplinary
team joins in to provide support to the pet
as well as the pet's family. For the pet,
there is pain management and creative
suggestions for symptom control. For
the family, there is emotional support.
Anticipatory grief is one of the hardest
forms of grief, because everything in the
future is so unclear. While pet parents
feel competent in other areas of their life,
they often feel out of control with the un-
predictability of the end of their pet's life.
Licensed therapists provide a safe place to
process fears and concerns, while design-
ing a plan to give them the most peace
and least regret. Having the team in place
well in advance enables the pet parent to
arrange services like home euthanasia to
avoid an 11
th
hour crisis. With the plan in
place, they can then truly relax and enjoy
this precious time together with their pet.
