The most important decision you will
make for your companion is when to end
the life. As a veterinarian who does a
signifi cant number of home euthanasias a
year I am ofter asked "when will I know."
That answer is different for everybody. Ev-
erybody's quality of life may be different.
For some its not ambulating on their own,
and for others the loss of appetite. To help
guide clients Dr. Villalobos, a veterinarian
that lectures on the human animal bond,
has developed the Quality of Life Scale.
The scale helps clients identify areas to be
evaluated. But remember it is only a guide.
Adequate pain management is a must and
the number one criterion for using the rest
of the scale.
More and more clients are requesting
home euthanasia. It is less stressful for
the clients and patients. Most of the home
euthanasia I do is for people that are not
my clients. I try very hard to put everyone
at ease and explain the procedure. I use a
2 injection technique, the fi rst to heavily
sedate them, that goes under the skin and
the second injection into the vein. The
remains can be taken care of by the client
or I can handle the aftercare. I would say
most people want the cremains returned to
the family. I always try to guide people in
making that fi nal decision and tell them it
is better to do it one day too soon than one
day too late.
