What else can you call it when a SPEA professor starts her own non-
governmental organization (NGO) to help the poorest of the poor in the
Congo? Or an instructor who is a former Iraqi Ambassador? And then there's
the scholar who testifies before Congress about global climate change.
SPEA is a place where you never know who you'll meet, or what you will learn.
A student from Kazakhstan sits with her laptop in the central Atrium talking to
a public finance major from Olney, Illinois. There's someone who wants to be
the CEO of a major hospital walking down the hall with a future urban forester.
You could stand in line to buy coffee and chat with a professor who was given
a teaching award that was voted on by students at the University. You might
overhear some students talking about their trip to South Korea . . . and how
they learned about governments, businesses, and the ordinary people there. Oh,
yeah, and the food was better than they thought it would be.
This is the world of SPEA, where students come for a phenomenal education
and the experience of a lifetime.
