Cabin Air Dust
Pollen Filters
Take a good look at the filter on the bottom. That's all
the junk that these filters keep from getting in your car.
If you can't remember the last time yours was changed,
do it today and once every year at least!!! Every three
months is better!!!

These things are
mounted up under the
hood near the wip-
ers. Take about 5
minutes to change,
BUT STOP!! Don't do
it like the dealers do, (just change the filter).
Park the car near where you can get a vac-
uum cleaner to it. Take out the filter, then
the screen, then vacuum out all the dust,
beans, and acorns. Blow out the screen with
a can of computer (compressed) air then put
it back in. Do this every 6 months, don't
bother if you smoke.
AIR FILTERS
Air filters take the dirt out of the air! Elementary! If
you're only going to keep your car until it reaches 50,000
miles, don't even bother changing it, but if you want to be
a member of the 100, 200 or 300,000 mile club, read on!
Aside from the visible dirt, leaves, sand and dust you can
see blowing in the wind, there's dirt in the air. Unless you
filter the air, the dirt gets into your engine.
Your VW "drinks" about a quart of air/per cylinder/per
revolution or 2,500 gallons per minute at 5,000 rpm. If
the air cycling through your car has .000001% of dirt in it,
that's a cup of dirt per year going into your engine. Would
you throw a cup of dirt into the engine of your car?
The dirt gets between your piston rings and the walls,
wears them out, and there goes your compression. First
quality air filters can add 100,000 miles between re-
ringing, not to mention that some dirt gets by the rings and
ends up in the oil and then in the bearings.

WHEN DO I NEED TO
CHANGE MY FILTERS?
There seems to be a lot of confusion
out there with regard to how often fluid
and filters should be changed. The first
thing to understand is that manufactur-
ers recommend intervals for "normal
use". Is sitting in stop and go traffic
for 45 minutes during your rush hour
commute "normal"? ABSOLUTELY
NOT!
Is driving for extended periods
on dirt roads following other vehicles
dust trails "normal"? ABSOLUTELY
NOT!
Is operating your vehicle in sub-
zero, or extremely high temperatures
"normal"? How about mountain driv-
ing, or towing a trailer?........You get
the idea. The fact of the matter is
that the way we Americans use our
vehicles often times would be viewed
as "EXTREME" Or "SEVERE" use
by the manufacturer! If you use your
vehicle in any of the ways described above,
or you drive a diesel, or both, the answer
is simply to modify the frequency of
your fluid and filter replacements. IT IS
IMPOSSIBLE TO CHANGE FLUID
AND FILTERS TOO FREQUENTLY!
The factory "recommended" inter-
vals range from 5000 to 10000 on oil
changes, 3000 to 5000 is better! Air
filters
should at least be cleaned and
inspected annually, replace as need-
ed, if in doubt REPLACE IT! Your
engine needs lots of clean air to run
efficiently, the improved mileage you
get will pay for the cost of the filter!
Modern Volkswagens now also have
"Cabin Air Filters"
These filter the
air that you breathe! Replace them!
You only get one set of lungs! If you
drive a lot, replace the fuel filter more
frequently. Fuel quality varies, water and
sediment are bad in your fuel no matter
what! The other fluids that need to be
maintained to keep your Volkswagen
healthy are brake fluid (the fluid breaks
down after time) engine coolant, trans-
mission fluid, and gear lube (manual
transmissions). If you are a little more
"gun shy" on these...GET HELP! Get
a Bentley Manual or a friend to assist
you. A little effort goes a long way
towards increasing the long term dura-
bility of your Volkswagen! Buy your
fluids and filters from us and you'll save
big! Both short term and long term!
