Tensioner Pulley
If your timing belt tensioner pulley has a bad bearing
or is bent, it will fail, if it fails your timing belt will
have trouble and if you jump time, your pistons may
come up while the valves are open - whoops! Major
damage will occur - be smart - inspect regularly. The
replacement is not expensive, major engine work is!

Don't even think about trying to change your TDI
timing belt without these precision-made tools. The
injection pump locking pin and camshaft locking
plate allow you to lock your cam and pump timing
in place before you remove the timing position if the
belt has broken.

Keep your TDI running cool with a new water
pump. If you're changing a timing belt on a
later(`99.5-'05) TDI, you should always replace
the pump too- it's driven by the timing belt and
could break the belt if it seizes, causing far worse
damage.

Early 1.8 turbo's have the water pump driven
by the serpentine belt. Later 1.8 turbos, TDI's,
and all V6 models have a water pump driven
by the timing belt. Always replace these water
pumps when changing the timing belt-you've
already done most of the work needed to
replace the pump. A seized water pump will
cause the timing belt to break or jump, causing
expensive damage to the engine!

Timing Belts
Timing belts
are a regular maintenance
item. Don't let your belt go longer than the
recommended interval! Diesels are especially
vulnerable if a timing belt breaks. They have
"zero clearance" or "interference" engines, which
means in the event that the timing belt breaks,
the pistons will impact the valves causing
catastrophic internal engine damage. Some gas
engines such as 16V's and 1.8T's also have these
"interference" engines. A little money and effort
will save you
the long run!
