Front springs on water-cooled VWs
tend to wear out after 100,000 miles
The ONLY solution is to buy a new
pair of springs. Our OEM springs
are the finest available and should
last a hundred thousand miles. The
early Rabbit and Scirocco, `74-79
had front springs with all equal sized
coils. The `80 on models came with
springs that had a smaller diameter
coil, or pig-tail on the top (i.e. all
coils were the same diameter except
the top coil, which is smaller). These
"new" model springs tend to last lon-
ger and have less fatigue and break-
age. Your older car can be updated
with these; all you need to do is to buy a pair, and a pair
of newer spring style upper spring mounts.

OEM Front Springs
HEAVY-DUTY SPRINGS
The Rabbits, Sciroccos, Golf and Jetta have all suffered
from poor springs, particularly the early models. Stock
springs on Rabbits, Sciroccos, and Jettas are a little weak
for any of these conditions: hard driving, gravel roads,
a two-hundred pound carpenter's tool box, or four two-
hundred pound adults. If you regularly drive under these
conditions or you are not satisfied with too frequent "bot-
toming out," then our heavy-duty springs are the ticket. The
sets we sell are the heaviest "almost standard" sets on the
market. They are U.S. made by a major manufacturer of
suspension products. Quality is first-class.
The springs are standard height, progressive rate (which
means as the spring is compressed, the rate of load which
you can carry increases), and approximately twenty percent
stiffer than the highest rate and heaviest factory GTI spring.
With these springs installed your car will ride a fraction of
an inch higher than stock, and, as they are progressive, the
spring rate the local carrying capacity actually increases as
the car is loaded. As a bonus, the car will have GTI-like
handling.

SNUBBERS, DUST BOOTS
When changing the struts, always replace the rubber
snubber stop. When the front strut bottoms out, it is
cushioned by this snubber and chances are 99% that
your snubbers went first, causing your inserts to bang
together and wear out.
We would rather sell all VWs the Golf
/Jetta snubber/
boot combo, as it is stronger & more durable.
SNUBBERS DUST BOOTS
STRUTS
All Rabbits, Sciroccos, Dashers, Jettas and Golfs use a
McPherson Strut front suspension. The front shocks on
a Rabbit, Scirocco, Dasher, Jetta, Golf, etc., are called
struts by mechanics. The strut (shock) is inside the coil
spring and is a principal part of the front suspension.
In fact, it holds up the car. The front struts usually last
somewhere from 50,000-75,000 miles depending on driv-
ing conditions.
To replace the strut, you have to take the spring and strut
assembly off the car and then disassemble them.
Sometimes all you need is a strut insert. When you have it
apart, you should inspect the upper strut bearing (or strut
mount) and see if your springs are weak. Don't replace
things unnecessarily, but maybe you should replace the
entire unit as an assembly. We can help you either way.
The entire strut assembly can be taken off with 4 bolts
with no special tools.
To take the strut out of the assembly, you buy a spring
compressor.
We sell strut inserts
(shocks) for all VWs.
Many times, all you need is just the insert. Place
them into your old strut tubes, reassemble them
with new snubbers, and you're done! It is reason-
able in price and easily done. These strut inserts
are top quality German SACHS parts. There is no
need to purchase the`Gas' inserts also listed here-
in, we don't sell `good-better-best' These are the
best inserts for non-racing applications, the high-
est quality made. The "Advantage", or Sports-
Handling kits are for those who want a racing or
sport ride. The quality of workmanship is equally
good. The racing ride is just different; firmer,
stiffer, giving more control under the extremes of
hard and sharp cornering. Genuine SACHS brand.
